Today was an AWESOME first day! We accomplished a lot of things went over rules, code of conduct, expectations, etc...
Students came home today with a folder (this will be there Thursday folder for the school year).

Students will be receiving textbooks tomorrow (wednesday) and will be required to have the textbooks covered at all times.

IMPORTANT: Recently in 5th grade we have been having a major issue with theft. On Friday a student's yearbook was stolen out of her locker and so far we have been unable to locate it. Also it was discovered last week that one of the yearbook camera's that the yearbook committee uses to take pictures for the yearbook was also stolen. The camera was last seen on Mrs. Cobble's desk it is a blue Nikon, Cool pix camera with a black and blue lowepro case. If you or your child have any information as to it's whereabouts please let us know asap.
A letter will be going home with your child to be signed and returned so we know that all parents are aware of the situation.

Monday: Students will be introduced to the theme and the class will discuss what they believe the theme will be about after taking a picture walk through the stories in the theme.
Tuesday: Students will define the vocabulary for "A Boy Called Slow" and the class will review the vocabulary words using a game called guess the covered word.
Independent Practice: Students will complete pb pg 103
Wednesday: Class will listen to "A Boy Called Slow" on cd, we will be stopping throughout the story to discuss what is happening and main ideas and details. The focus of this story is drawing conclusions from the text and predict and infering.
Thursday: Students will be comparing and contrasting the characters in the story using a venn-diagram. Students will also practice their noting details skills by taking notes about how Slow prepares for battle.
Friday: Re-read "A Boy Called Slow" with a partner and complete the responding questions.

SOCIAL STUDIES: This week we are beginning our discussion of the 1920's and the Great Depression. Students will be learning about all the changes that were happening after WWI and how those changes eventually lead to the Great Depression.
Students will then be working on a project called "Brother Can you Spare a Dime" in which students will be exploring prices of common food items in the 1920's compared to the prices of those same items of food today. Students will try to determine what they believe the reasons are for such an increase in prices over that period of time.

Monday: As a class read the beginning of "Fly High" the story of Bessie Coleman and discuss what students will be creating for the science fair based on the book. Students will be split into groups to create posters about Bessie Coleman's life. We will be reading and discussing the 1st half of the book today.
Tuesday: Read and discuss the 2nd half of the story of Bessie Coleman, students will work with their group to create their poster of the specific part of her life that they have been assigned.
Wednesday: Groups will finish their group poster and begin working on their story wheel for Bessie Coleman. The story wheel that the students will be creating will highlight all of the key points in Bessie Coleman's life.

SOCIAL STUDIES: For the science fair the social studies classes will be creating a timeline of the advances in aviation.
Monday: Students will be using books to find out about advances in aviation and start to put the information that they find into a timeline.
Tuesday: Groups from writing class will create a summary of the plane that they choose to write their news article about and put the summary on a notecard for the timeline. Groups will also begin typing their news article.
Wednesday: Continue typing news report and creating time line. The time line will also consist of pictures of the planes that have been chosen.

SOCIAL STUDIES: The groups did a good job on their war research and powerpoint presentations. This week we will spend a few days going over the most important details from each of the wars as a class to make sure that all the students understood the correct information from the students powerpoint presentations.
Toward the end of the week (Wednesday or Thursday) we will begin our unit on the 1920's and then lead into the Great Depression.

Wednesday: Begin going over units of time when changing from a smaller unit to a larger unit, you must divide and when changing from a larger unit to a smaller unit you must multiply.

MATH:
Monday: Review changing units of measurement by having students complete a matching game and then practicing changes units of measurement from one unit to another.
Tuesday: Students will learn how to read measurements in inches on a ruler.
Guided practice: pg 533 #'s 1-8, through this activity we will be practicing estimating measurements as well.
Wednesday: Checkpoint Quiz on lessons 9-1 and 9-2 (standard units of measurement)
Introduction to metric units of length. How to measure in metric units and what metric units are used to measure.
Thursday: Students will learn how to change metric units of length by using decimals. Students will learn that they can either multiply or divide by 10, 100, 1000 to change from one metric unit to another.

Monday: We will begin the next story in the theme Person to Person we will begin by introducing the vocabulary to "Yang the Second and her secret admirers" We will also discuss the meaning of heritage.
Tuesday: Go over vocabulary using textbook pgs 392-393.

We will also begin reading and discussing "Yang the Second" focusing on the strategy of Questioning and the skill of comparing and contrasting.
Wednesday: We will continue reading and discussing "Yang the Second" and review making inferences and cause and effect.
Thursday: Compare and Contrast Lesson using pb pgs 41-42 the class will compare and contrast characters in the story. Students will focus on why it is important to find the similarities and differences between characters in the story and how those similarities and differences contribute to the story.
Friday: Students will listen to "Yang the Second" on cd and complete pb pg 40 (the comprehension check). Students will also begin working on the responding questions at the end of the story.
READING HOMEWORK: Students will now have reading homework EVERY Wednesday in Reading. The assignments will focus on various reading skills and strategies. Every homework assignment will be assigned on Wednesday's and will be due on Friday's.

SOCIAL STUDIES: This week students will be starting a group project on one of the wars that the United States has been involved in, that we have yet to discuss in class yet. Students will be assigned groups and then will be assigned a war. Students will be provided with many different resources in order to find out specific information about the war that the group is assigned. There will be six different groups (WWI, WWII, Cold War, Vietnam, Persian Gulf War, and Korean War) Groups will have to find out information about the war including causes of the war, countries involved, any new weapons that were introduced during the war, american involvement both in the war and on the home front, and the end of the war and the results.

After the groups find the required information they will create a power point presentation about their war and they will present the information to the rest of the class. Groups will have a little over a week to prepare for and create presentations. Group presentations will start Wednesday or Thursday or next week. This is a complete in class project and all group members will be graded both as a group and as an individual. Students will be given step by step directions about the project as we begin throughout the week.

Each group will choose an amendment to illustrate on their poster with a brief explanation of what the amendment was.
Tuesday: Introduction to the Civil Rights Movement using MLK and Civil Rights Timeline (We are skipping forward 100 years because the Civil Rights Movement directly relates to the fact that even though during Reconstruction slaves were freed African Americans still did not have the same rights (even though by law they should have). Students will also be learning about the importance of using primary sources.
Wednesday: Discussion of the play "I have a Dream" how did the events that happened during the civil rights movement change history

Tuesday: Using the map on page 177 of their textbook students will discuss what the map shows and use the map to discuss and order the battles of the Civil War in the order that they occurred. We will begin reading and discussing Lesson 1 of chapter 6 "A Nation at war" pgs 176-179.

Wednesday: We will finish reading and discussing pgs 180-181 students will be practicing the reading skill of classify and summarize and review the advantages and strategies of the Union and the Confederacy.

MATH:

This week we will begin chapter 5 on data, graphs and probability. We will be learning how to use data from a survey to create different types of graphs (line graphs, bar graphs, double bar graphs, and circle graphs.)

Tuesday: Introduction to collecting data and making line plots. Vocabulary: survey, line plot, data, frequency table, and sample. As a class we will investigate how to make line plots by taking different surveys in the classroom and then making a line plot based on the survey.

Wednesday: How to make a bar graph and find the appropriate intervals for the scale. Vocabulary: horizontal axis, vertical axis, interval, horizontal scale, vertical scale, scale labels, key and title.

Thursday: Students will learn what a trend means in relationship to line graphs. Students will use information from different surveys to learn how to create line graphs.

Friday: How to label circle graphs and how to make circle graphs. Review of what type of graph is used when. The importance of graphs, what information do they provide.

This week we will be finishing up the story "La Bamba" about a boy named Manuel that enters a talent show and what happens to him when he tries to pantomime the song "La Bamba" during the talent show.

Tuesday: Class will listen to "La Bamba" on cd and then we will discuss story elements and how to make a story map (characters, setting, plot, events, problem and solution.) Students will complete pb pg 118-119

Wednesday: Review of cause and effect and predicting outcomes. Students will complete pb pg 117 which is a comprehension check for the story and will be given the directions for the talent show poster project that they will be completing in class.

Thursday: "La Bamba" Selection Test and begin talent show poster.

Friday: Complete talent show poster and present

READING HOMEWORK:

SOCIAL STUDIES:

This week students will be reviewing things that they learned in 4th grade about the United States and how it came to be. We will investigate European explorers that founded North America and the native american impact on settlers. Students will review the 13 colonies and will discuss the importance of the American Revolution and the beginning of the United States.

Monday: We will be having a catch up for students to catch up on any work that they need to finish. Students who still have missing work will have to finish whatever they do not get finished over Thanksgiving Break.

Tuesday: Service Learning Day - Students will be learning all about recycling. From 8:15-9:15 we will be learning about different things that can be recycled, ways to reduce and reuse and completing some fun activities. From 9:30-11 we will have a presentation from DSWA about recycling.
11-12 Lunch
12-2 - Clean up our community, students will be walking around the town of Clayton helping to clean up the community.

Students may wear "yard work" clothes (jeans, sweats, etc... clothes that may get dirty.) We also need more parent volunteers to help while we are walking around Clayton so if you can help just come on by!

This theme focuses on naturally occurring disasters such volcanoe eruptions, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. We will also be going over the independent work that the students completed during reading level assessments and students will share their tall tales that they wrote last week (I will be taking their tall tales to make a classroom book out of them).
Reading Homework:
Students should be reading at least 30 minutes every night.

Social Studies:
This week students will finish their neighborhood map which must include a compass rose, title, five different places coded with symbols, key, and roads. The map also must be neatly colored and some will be displayed in the classroom. We will also be working this week on latitude and longitude and finding locations on a map. Students will practice identifying locations of different states, countries and continents.

It was great to see so many students and parents at meet in greet last week. I'm looking forward to a wonderful school year with all of you! This week students will be getting familiar with the new school and new procedures. Students will be getting a folder that they will design and it will become their Thursday folder. After this week the folder will come every Thursday with important information and graded papers. On the first day of school the students will bring these folders home in the folder you will find...

~ Welcome letter from me
~ Medication permission slip (this is so that I can give your child cough drops, bandaids, anti-itch cream, etc. in the classroom). This paper must be signed and returned as soon as possible.
~ Supply list - just in case you haven't gotten supplies yet :)
~ Multiplication chart - Students should study these EVERY night.
~ Cafeteria paperwork for Free and reduced lunch
~ Book orders (3) - Any book orders are due by September 22.
~ Student/Parent Handbook - last 3 pages need to be signed and returned.

Students will also get agenda books the first day of school. I sign agenda books everyday at the end of the day, so if the agenda is not signed then I have not checked to make sure students wrote down their homework.

All students must have a lock for their locker.

Hello everyone,
It's almost that time of year again, Back to School!!!! I'm looking forward to a great year in our brand new school!!! I am planning lots of exciting activities and field trips. Hopefully everyone is having a wonderful summer and is almost ready to get back to school. The following is the supply list for 5th grade!
- Pencils: an unlimited amount
- Crayons, colored pencils, markers
- 1 pair of scissors
- 1 bottle of glue/2 glue sticks
- 5-8 folders, one for each class and different colors; 1 must be green for Spanish
- 4 spiral notebooks (1 for science, math, reading and writing)
- 1 hand held pencil sharpener
- Erasers
- Ruler
- 3 nylon book covers
- Highlighters
- Please, ERASABLE PENS ONLY!
****Although most students do like to have binders, be advised that they will not be able to fit into their desks or lockers. Thus students will have to carry them around at all times.
The following items are for class use: If possible please send your child with the following:
- 2 rolls of paper towels
- 2 boxes of tissues
- 1 container of disinfectant wipes (not baby wipes)
- 2 bottles of hand sanitizer
- 2 packs of loose leaf paper(this is shared in the class throughout the year)
- Extra pencils, erasers and erasable pens
We are using an incentive system this year to keep students on task, and rewarding them for positive behavior. The following donations would be appreciated from you to help with this program: pencils, folders, markers, crayons, crafts, candy, or whatever you may think children would like as a reward.

Students have been really struggling with our measurement chapter. Please help your child at home with converting units of measurement and units of time. This week we are starting chapter 9 on Measurement. We will be learning how to convert between different units of measurement and adding and subtracting units of measurement. (12 inches = 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard, 5280 feet = 1 mile, 1760 yards = 1 mile). We will also be working on using a ruler to measure objects to the closest one inch, 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch.

April 7: Recycling Project - My homeroom will be helping to recycle the old textbooks that are in the teacher resource room. We will spend Tuesday afternoon separating the bindings and the pages for recycling.
April 9: Service Learning Day - 5th grade will be heading to Smyrna Municpal Park to clean up the park. We will be eating lunch there so be sure to send a bag lunch with your child. Parents are welcome to join us!

We will be finishing up "Pioneer Girl" this week. Students will finish their Museum Display project and will be taking their selection test on the story on Wednesday.

What's Happening:
Disney: Earth - Field Trip Slips for Disney: Earth movie went home on February 27. We will be going to see this remarkable movie about our planet on Earth Day (April 22). Cost is $9. 4th and 5th grade will be going and we need two parent chaperones per homeroom (chaperones also have to pay $9.) Slips are due on Friday, March 13.

READING:
This week we are comparing two stories "Summer on Wheels" and "The Wright Brothers". Students will be looking at the similarities and differences between the two and looking at the writing style of each. Students will also be performing a play from our book this week.

The only homework this week will be to read 30 minutes each night and get any missing work completed or classwork that hasn't been finished. The classwork this week will be practice book pg 71, 73 and 74.

What's Happening:
Wii Ticket Raffle: Those students who wanted to participate in selling raffle tickets were given their tickets last week, they may turn in entry slips with money as it collected. All money and raffle tickets are due back to me by the end of March.

Practicum Student: I will be having a practicum student in my classroom for the next couple of weeks. She is from Wilmington College and is working her way to becoming a teacher. She will be in every Friday all day to see how the classroom works, help with students and she will even be teaching a lesson.
READING:
This week we will finish reading "Dear Mr. Henshaw." The students are working on the comprehension strategy of evaluating and the comprehension skill of making inferences. Students will be testing on Dear Mr. Henshaw on Thursday. We will then move on to comparing different stories.

We are continuing our study of the Civil Rights movement this week we will be watching the DVD of Fred Gray and his committment to stop segregation. The focus of this unit is to show the students the importance of the ordinary people in the movement and that it was not just a few people who were involved in making a difference.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Students are testing Monday on the Civil War and Reconstruction. They will be allowed to use their books and notes to help them on the test. Since February is Black History month I have decided to jump ahead in history a little bit. We will be going from the civil war to civil rights. Besides the fact that civil rights goes perfectly with the Black History month it also will fit now because we just finished talking about the beginning of segregation and the establishment of the Jim Crow Laws.
Through our study of the Civil Rights movement students will be learning about the "ordinary" people that had a major roll in the civil rights movement.
SOCIAL STUDIES HOMEWORK:
Tuesday: Students will bring home an activist worksheet on Tuesday that has all the names of the people we will be studing during our civil rights unit. The assignment is for the parents to look over the list with their child and check any names that may be familiar and write one thing that you know about the person. PLEASE DO NOT DO ANY RESEARCH to figure out who these people are if you don't know. The point is to show the students that these are regular people that not that many people know even were a part of the civil rights movement.

READING: We are continuing with the theme "Voices of the Revolution", the story that we will be reading this week is called "James Forten". Students will be working on the comprehension skill of Following Directions and we will be reviewing the skills of Topic, Main Idea, and Detail and Author's Viewpoint.

There will be a selection test on "James Forten" on Friday, January 9.

SOCIAL STUDIES: This week we will begin our study of the Civil War. We will start by discussing differences between the North and the South before the Civil War. We will also be discussing slavery, the Underground Railroad, and Abraham Lincoln. I will be doing periodic folder checks with the students, so students must make sure that they have a folder (not binder) with the 3 brads in it to hold paper.

SOCIAL STUDIES HOMEWORK:
~ Monday: Students will define all the vocabulary for chapter 5: tariff, states' rights, sectionalism, abolitionist, discrimination, Underground Railroad, slave state, free state, Union, popular sovereignty, fugitive, secession, confederacy, civil war. (all words can be found in the glossary of the text book).
~ Thursday: Students will create a flyer to encourage other townspeople to oppose the Fugitive Slave Law. (In class students will be reading a play about the fugitive slave law, they will need to use information in the play to create the flyer). Flyers will be written from a character's point of view, stating the characters position and supported with details from the play.

Monday is our PBS day, the students did a great job of keeping the bathrooms clean, so their reward is a day of fun activities.
Students will be playing board and card games in the morning, then a scavenger hunt after special. Hang man and creative writing after lunch and recess, and the big activity of the day is Pie in the Face.

Tuesday is our Holiday Festivities - My homeroom does not need to bring in paper products (we have a ton). We do need food and drinks; like chips, fruit, veggies, brownies, cookies, capri suns (or juice boxes), etc... Polyana is Tuesday students are asked to bring in a boy or girl gift that is less than $5.00 wrapped to exchange at our party!

JA Biztown: I am still in need of 10 volunteers for Biztown. You will need to attend a training meeting on Thursday, December 4 from 5-7 at Junior Achievement in Wilmington and then also attend the field trip on December 12. Holiday Dreams Fundraiser: Fundraisers will be in on Tuesday, November 18 and may be picked up in th gym. Students are not allowed to take the fundraisers home a parent must come pick them up.

JA BIZTOWN: I am still in need of parent volunteers for Biztown it is a great trip! Parents need to attend a training session on December 4 from 5-7 (you will be served dinner). The trip is on December 12. Permission slips went home and need to be signed and returned by Friday Nov. 21. Cost is $20. Parent volunteers do not have to pay.

Social Studies: On Monday we will finish up our discussion of elections, the final three candidates for class president will give their speeches on Monday and the vote will be taken for who will be class president. On Wednesday we will complete a chart for the electoral votes to see how the country voted for our next president. On Thursday we will begin our unit on economics for JA Biztown. Biztown is an economic simulation activity that is sponsored by Junior Achievement of Delaware. Students will learn how banks are run, learn how to have both a savings and checking account, and learn how to write checks. They will also learn the responsibilities of having a job and working as a team. More information will be coming home with your child.

This week we will be talking about ecosystems and conservation, students will be thinking of ways to conserve in order to protect our environment.

Reading:
This week in reading I will conducting Reading Level Assessments with individual students. While I am doing this with individuals the students will be working on Tall Tales. Students will work independently to read several tall tales and by the end of the week the students will be writing their own tall tale.

Math:
Students will begin Chapter 1 this week, focusing on place value. We will begin by learning how to write numbers in expanded form, written form, and standard form. Students will be doing several different activities with place value this week.
Math Homework:
Tuesday: Worksheet Reteaching lesson 1-1 Place Value through Billions
Wednesday: Worksheet Practice Lesson 1-2 Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers
Thursday: Worksheet Enrichment Lesson 1-3 Place Value through Thousandths

Social Studies:
We will be starting chapter 1 this week, beginning with types of resources, then continuing with regions. Students will also do a skillbuilder on reading maps focusing on latitude and longitude. We will also do a focused lesson on geography and hurricanes.
Social Studies Homework:

Students should use either library or internet sources to find out how hurricanes are named. They need to create their own system for naming hurricanes and then name 3 hurricanes. This will be due on Monday, September 8.

Thursday Folders

Hello everyone!
Thursday folders will be coming home for the first time today. This week you will find a 5th grade contract this reviews all the rules that we have gone over with the students this week and also has a copy of the code of conduct and dress code attached to it. Also in the folder you will find a packet from the school that includes a parent questionairre and some information from the interventionists. Please review the information and sign all the papers and return them in the folder with your child on Tuesday.

There is NO SCHOOL Friday August 29 and Monday September 1. Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello everyone!
It was great seeing so many of you at meet and greet! Hopefully everyone has heard about the new grading system that PCA will be using this year. We will be have trimesters, so students will get report cards 3x a year. Also we have a new report card, students will not only get an academic grade, but they will also be getting a citizenship grade, which will include participation, following directions, respect, and repsonsibility. I know that it may seem a little confusing at first but I will be available to answer any questions that you may have about it. Students will be getting a folder with important information on the first day of school. Please be sure to read everything in it and return the folder and any signed papers on Tuesday August 26. The folder will then be sent home every Thursday with information and papers for the rest of the school year.

Hello everyone,
It's almost that time of year again, Back to School!!!! I'm looking forward to a great year and am planning lots of exciting activities. Hopefully everyone is having a wonderful summer and is almost ready to get back to school. I have noticed that the 5th grade supply list is incorrect on the school website.

The following is the supply list for 5th grade!
- Pencils: an unlimited amount
- Crayons, colored pencils, markers
- 1 pair of scissors
- 1 bottle of glue/2 glue sticks
- 5-8 folders, one for each class and different colors; 1 must be green for Spanish
- 3 spiral notebooks (1 for science, math and writing)
- 1 hand held pencil sharpener
- Erasers
- Ruler
- 3 nylon book covers
- Highlighters
- Please, ERASABLE PENS ONLY!
****Although most students do like to have binders, be advised that they will not be able to fit into their desks. Thus students will have to carry them around at all times.

The following items are for class use: If possible please send your child with the following:
- 2 rolls of paper towels
- 2 boxes of tissues
- 1 container of disinfectant wipes (not baby wipes)
- 2 bottles of hand sanitizer
- 2 packs of loose leaf paper(this is shared in the class throughout the year)
- Extra pencils, erasers and erasable pens
We are using an incentive system this year to keep students on task, and rewarding them for good behavior. The following donations would be appreciated from you: pencils, folders, markers, crayons, crafts, candy, or whatever you may think children would like as a reward.
